GST Registration in India

GST (Goods and Services Tax) registration is a mandatory tax registration under the CGST Act, 2017 for any business supplying goods or services above the prescribed turnover threshold, and for certain businesses regardless of turnover (e-commerce sellers, inter-state suppliers, and more). Once registered, you receive a unique 15-digit GSTIN, become eligible to claim input tax credit, and can legally collect GST from your customers. Registration applies to every entity type — proprietorship, partnership, LLP, or company.

Overview

What is GST Registration?

GST Registration is the process by which a business gets recognized under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 as a supplier of goods or services, obtaining a unique Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN). It is not tied to any one entity type — a proprietorship, partnership, LLP, or company all register the same way, through Form REG-01 on the GST portal.

Registration becomes mandatory once your turnover crosses the prescribed threshold, or immediately if you sell through e-commerce platforms, supply goods inter-state, or fall under a handful of other categories — regardless of turnover. Once registered, you can claim input tax credit on your purchases and issue valid tax invoices to your customers.

Key Features

  • A tax registration, not a business entity — every entity type can register
  • 15-digit PAN-based GSTIN issued on approval
  • Mandatory above ₹40 lakh turnover for goods, ₹20 lakh for services*
  • Mandatory regardless of turnover for e-commerce sellers & inter-state suppliers
  • No minimum capital requirement
  • Filed online via Form REG-01 on the GST portal

*Lower thresholds (₹20 lakh for goods, ₹10 lakh for services) apply in special category states.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does GST registration take?

Typically 3–7 working days when the application is Aadhaar-authenticated. It can take up to 30 days if physical verification of the business premises is required.

Is GST registration mandatory for my business?

It's mandatory once your annual turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower thresholds apply in special category states). It's also mandatory regardless of turnover if you sell on e-commerce platforms, supply goods inter-state, or fall under a few other specific categories.

What is the difference between Regular GST and the Composition Scheme?

The Regular Scheme lets you charge GST and claim input tax credit, with no turnover cap. The Composition Scheme offers a flat, lower tax rate and simpler quarterly filing, but you can't claim input tax credit, collect GST from customers, or supply goods inter-state — and it's capped at ₹1.5 crore turnover (₹50 lakh for service providers).

What is a GSTIN and an ARN?

GSTIN is your 15-digit, PAN-based Goods and Services Tax Identification Number, issued once your registration is approved. ARN (Application Reference Number) is generated the moment you submit your REG-01 application, and lets you track its status until the GSTIN is issued.

What happens if I don't register despite crossing the threshold?

You become liable for a penalty of 10% of the tax due (minimum ₹10,000), or 100% of the tax due in cases of deliberate evasion, along with interest on the unpaid tax.

What compliance is required after registration?

Regular taxpayers file GSTR-1 (outward supplies) and GSTR-3B (summary return) monthly, or quarterly under the QRMP scheme. Composition taxpayers pay tax quarterly via CMP-08 and file an annual return, GSTR-4. Our first-year plans cover this filing for you.
